Moving Tips for the Young and the Old

Should You Choose Wet Or Dry Boat Storage?

If you don't use your boat year-round, or if it sometimes goes weeks without anyone on board, you may be considering the best storage solution. When it comes to storing your boat, you have two main options — wet or dry storage. The following guide can help you decide which storage option is the best one for you.

How often do you use the boat?

Your use patterns can really help you hone in on the best storage option. If you tend to use the boat at least once a month or prefer to have it ready to hit the waves at a moment's notice, then wet storage is by far the better option. On the other hand, if you sometimes go months between uses, or tend to only be a summer boater, then dry storage is better. With dry storage, you know the boat is safe from damage that can occur in the water as well as damage that can occur due to weathering and exposure. If months go by with no one on the boat, extensive damage is more likely to occur since it can be a while before it is noticed.

Are there garaging options?

If you are leaning towards dry storage, there is one thing to keep in mind — can your boat be garaged? Many boats are small enough to be stored in an indoor facility, but if you have a large boat or one with an impressive mast, then indoor storage may be unavailable or out of your price range. If your reason for dry storage is winter or seasonal weather, then this may be a deal-breaker. In this case, it may even be better to opt for wet storage.

Do you mind planning ahead?

Another thing to keep in mind with dry storage is that you must know your plans ahead of time. You won't simply be able to show up at the marina and request that your boat is launched. Often, you have to schedule launching days or even weeks in advance. There are also sometimes delays, such as if there is an equipment malfunction. If the idea of not having your boat immediately annoys you, then dry storage may not be the best choice.

Does your boat need repairs or maintenance?

If your boat could use a fresh coat of paint or the replacement of the props on the motor, then opt for dry storage. Chances are your boat will have to be lifted from the water anyway to complete these repairs. Many boat storage facilities even offer package options that include repairs, inspections, storage, and other services. This can save you money if you were already planning to store the boat for some time.

The good news is that you don't have to just use one storage solution. You can opt for wet storage during periods of heavy use, then switch to dry storage for winter or when the boat needs work. Contact a boat storage facility to learn more.
